Cigars are hygroscopic and it's important to know that if you love smoking cigars because it means that cigars will dry out when they are in a dry environment and they will absorb moisture when they are in a humid environment. And what's even worse about cigars and humidity is that cigars will continue to absorb humidity so long as there is humidity in the air... And just what does that mean for a cigar smoker like yourself?
Basically it means that you're not going to get the full flavor of your cigar and in the worst case scenario you won't even want to smoke your cigar because it won't taste or burn right. A cigar that has too much moisture will not burn right and it will even be hard to keep lit. A cigar that is constantly going out is a good sign of a cigar that has been exposed to too much moisture. Damp cigars are also sometimes hard to draw on, smoke for you beginners to cigar smoking, and the smoke that you get will usually be too thick and won't be pleasant to your palate.
On the other hand a cigar that doesn't have sufficient moisture will burn too hot and produce an unpleasant taste as well. The problem with a cigar that burns too hot is that as the temperature of the cigar rises and gets to a point where it's too hot, the cigar will begin to lose a lot of it's flavor as the natural oils of the cigar are compromised with the heat. Cigars are filled with subtle flavors and unfortunately you will lose most or all of them when your cigars are too dry.
The good news is that none of this has to happen and all you have to do is properly store your cigars to maintain their freshness and to experience everything that a good cigar has to offer. If you want to experience all of the subtle flavors that a cigar has to offer then I highly recommend you store your cigars in a wooden cigar box, a humidor, to keep them fresh and ready-to-smoke at all times.
The ideal temperature, or humidity to be more accurate, inside your wooden cigar box for your cigars is somewhere between 60-70% relative humidity. Relative humidity is simply a measurement of the amount of moisture in the atmosphere. If you have a wooden cigar box this is where you will need your humidity levels to be for optimum cigar flavor and freshness. Aside from the humidity levels it's also important to store your cigars in a temperature that is ideally below 75 degrees Fahrenheit and in a dark place.
Doing just these three things will ensure the freshness of your cigars while they are stored in your wooden cigar box, that they will smoke well and steadily and that the cigar will give you it's maximum flavor as well.
