We've already discussed how wooden cigar boxes are critical because they help keep your cigars fresh and in this post we're going to talk about maintaining your humidor cigar boxes.
In order to properly maintain your wooden cigar boxes it’s essential to know what the relative humidity is inside your humidor. To do this you’ll need a hygrometer. A hygrometer is simply a measuring device that is used to measure the amount of humidity in the air. Hygrometers are available in both mechanical and digital versions and are relatively inexpensive.
The ideal humidity level in wooden cigar boxes is anywhere between 64-72% humidity. Once your hygrometer starts to measure at or below 64% humidity, it’s time to add some distilled water to your humidifier. Only add distilled water to your humidifier because tap water has chemicals, minerals and organic impurities that you do not want mixing with your cigars as they age in your humidor.
When it comes to moistening your humidifier it’s important not to drench it with distilled water. Ideally you just want to moisten it and then allow it to raise the humidity level.
Different cigars will smoke differently depending on the relative humidity so it’s a good idea to play around with your humidity level. Just keep in mind that anywhere between 64-72% relative humidity is fine for your cigars.
Other than that it’s important to keep your humidor cigar boxes out of the heat and away from direct sunlight. It’s also a good idea to keep your wooden cigar boxes away from stereos and TV’s because they generate a lot of heat as well. Ideally you want your wooden cigar boxes in a temperature below 75 degrees and above 6o degrees Fahrenheit.
