Choosing your first cigar can be a bit intimidating especially if you just walk right into your local cigar shop without researching anything beforehand and then getting completely overwhelmed by the different kinds and varieties of cigars available to you.
The best piece of advice I can give you is to select a mild cigar to start out with because they seem to be the most palatable for beginners. Mild cigars are typically lighter in color, a light tan is a good color for beginners, and what you really want to stay away from are any darker cigars like the one below.
Dark, Full-Flavored Cigar
The darker cigars, like the one above are "full-flavored" cigars and most cigar smokers will tell you that they're too strong and bold for beginners. Another plus for mild cigars is that they are typically less expensive then the darker, more flavorful cigars.
Another really good tip and something a lot of people don't take advantage of is asking their local cigar shop owner or tobacconist for their recommendations. Make sure to let them know that you are a beginner and that you're looking forĀ a good cigar to get started with.
Once you've picked out a few cigars for yourself it's time to inspect them. Basically what you want to do is gently squeeze the cigar, one by one, and roll it slowly between your thumb and index finger. What I like to listen for is any cracking or any other indications that the cigar might be too dry. When you're squeezing and rolling the cigar you also want to feel for any hard or soft spots. Both can lead to a cigar that will not smoke well so you want to stay away from those as well.
Finally you also want to visually inspect the cigar and look for any cracking on the outside as well as any type of discoloration. When purchasing your first few cigars it's important to not buy more then you can smoke in a few days unless you already have your own cigar humidor or wooden cigar box to properly store them.
To summarize if you're new to smoking cigars you'll want to start out with a lighter colored mild cigar. It's always a good idea to ask the cigar shop owner for his recommendations on some good cigars for beginners. And finally make sure to feel and visually inspect the cigar to make sure that it's fresh and doesn't have and hard or soft spots.
